Hate Watching Backrooms: Art? Sure. Horror? ...WHERE?!
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A movie about endless yellow hallways should be pure nightmare fuel, so why did Backrooms leave us split between genuine admiration and total disbelief? We go scene by scene on what works, what collapses, and why the film’s biggest swing the “evil pirate” third act lands as either bold and terrifying or just plain silly, depending on what you want from horror.
We dig into the Backrooms lore problem: if the creator has a long web series and deep worldbuilding, how much should the movie explain for newcomers? We argue about rules versus answers, why audiences confuse the two, and how sound design, production design, and found footage choices can build real tension even when the story refuses to hand you clean explanations. We also get into the monster reveal debate and the question of whether modern “elevated horror” keeps getting labeled horror without delivering actual scares.
Then we go after the character layer. Clark reads like an anti-manosphere cautionary tale: entitled, self-deluded, and stuck performing change without wanting it. We talk through the therapist storyline, the mental health subtext, the off-screen “descent” we wanted to watch, and the alternative version of this film we think would turn the Backrooms into the main event instead of a backdrop.
If you love liminal space horror, internet-born mythology, and messy movie arguments where neither side backs down, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who has strong horror opinions, and leave a review with your verdict: did Backrooms stick the landing or lose you on the monster?

Early Morning Heat And House Ants
SPEAKER_01Let's not talk about my existence.
SPEAKER_02I always want to talk about your existence, Dan. It's beautiful. Pretty fascinating. It's fascinating. It's beautiful. It's sweet. I love it. Okay. We wouldn't be anywhere without you, Dan.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to Hate Watching with Dan and Tony. I'm Dan. And I'm Tony. This is an early morning edition, so I'm not going to scream until I get going too much.
SPEAKER_02Dan's making us wake up. He felt like I was being too lazy in my life, and he's like, we need to start a regiment where you wake up at a good hour. He's like my father. Well, if we could yeah, if we could run fans during this thing, it'd be okay. No, I know. I'm can you hear mine? I have mine in the other room moving, so at least there's air movement, even though it's not cold air. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01I have the door cracked, and so you know, yeah, no, I can't hear anything, but the door cracks, so I got cool air coming in from the rest of the house. Yeah, it helps a little.
SPEAKER_02It's supposed to be 96 today in the valley or something like that. No thanks.
SPEAKER_01The good news here is that we have uh it cools down at night, and then you open the windows and the cool air comes in.
SPEAKER_02I guess that's good. It does cool off at night because we got home last night pretty late. I think it was like 11:30, and it was still muggy. Oh I am not a fan of that. I like my night. If there's no sun, it should not feel warm. It should be cold. I should be like, boy, I wish I had a sweatshirt. No, we're not very frustrating.
SPEAKER_01We're still getting the cool, yeah. We're we're we're in a location where we still get the ocean coming in. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Are you really that close?
SPEAKER_01Well, we're no lot, we're quite a ways away, but we are close enough that it's still the ocean's still, you can feel it. You can't smell it, but it's great. So we haven't reached that part of summer where you go to nighttime and it's like there's no breeze and it's just hot, and you're like, oh wow.
SPEAKER_02We got our ants back yesterday, so we know it's getting hot out. It's great. Uh, more pets. Yeah, it's all we need. Hundreds, hundreds of pets
Introducing Backrooms And First Reactions
SPEAKER_02at a time.
SPEAKER_01Well we do on this show is we watch a movie, then we talk about the movie. We do sometimes. Generally, we do terrible movies. Not generally, almost always we do terrible movies. Are you gonna tell me that we didn't this week? Like this movie.
SPEAKER_02Dan, you know what this movie reminds me of? This is this is one of those movies that you usually does it remind you of It Follows? Oh god, no. I I like this movie more than I like it follows, I'll tell you that. Okay, right off the time. Well, there you go. But this feels like a movie that you would watch and then you would make me watch because you think I'm gonna hate it. Because I watch this movie and my eyes roll so hard in my head when I watch things like this. Yes, come on. Um make an allegory for addiction, man. I don't care. I don't care about any of it. Oh you see, I don't and I laughed so hard when the pirate, when pirate Carl comes in. Spoilers. Spoiler alert. It's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in my life. You didn't like the pirate. I did not like the pirate. And in in it's one of those movies where they're like, let's show the monster. Let's really show the monster. And this is you shouldn't, you shouldn't show it this much, because it ruins it. I I mean, honestly, you show it even for one second, it is ruined for me. It's too dumb.
SPEAKER_01I'd seen like a clip of how they shot the monster. And so I sort of had I so I I sort of knew there were I knew the monster was in this. We're doing backrooms, the back rooms, by the way.
SPEAKER_02Uh yes, yes, backrooms. Is it backrooms or the back rooms? I don't know, Dan. I disrespected it enough to not even look up the real title. Oh, there it is. Uh, it seems like it's just backrooms. Okay, it's just backrooms.
SPEAKER_01Um spoilers, at the end, uh there's an evil pirate, basically. It's evil pirate simulacrum of our main character.
SPEAKER_02Um, act three has nothing to do with acts one and two, is how I feel. How interesting.
SPEAKER_01How interesting. Because the movie's not it's not real scary.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_01For the first movie.
SPEAKER_02There's a couple of moments. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01They they do they do a little bit and they do some interesting things, and um and then the end, the third act, if you don't like the third act, you're not gonna be happy.
SPEAKER_02I am and I am not happy.
SPEAKER_01I had a total of zero problems with the third act, so zero Dan Zero! Truly a zero.
SPEAKER_02That can't be right. Oh, we're gonna have to talk about this. Zero is a is a crazy number.
SPEAKER_01I I I didn't agree with the ending, actually. I mean, this movie I think with could have used a little tinkering, but for what it is and and what movies get put out, I got no problems with this. Here's the thing. I got no problems. I you know, and it I think it's kind of like obsession. Obsession's the same way where you're like a lot of pieces in this movie that are great. Um, I don't think it adds up. I thought this one added up more for me just because I agree.
SPEAKER_02I agree with that a hundred percent. I we Naomi and I have talked about this ad nauseum now for the last couple weeks between this and obsession, and I am so much less mad at this movie. In fact, I don't even think I'm mad at this movie, I think I'm a little disappointed in this movie, and I'm again if I ever met this guy that made it, I'd be like, really, guy, come on. We really gotta do something this silly. Um, because this is just not my kind of movie. Sure. Whereas Obsession should be my kind of movie, and I think that they really mess that up.
SPEAKER_01Um Well, I mean, the the bones of Obsession are so good. That's what I'm saying. It makes you a lot angrier. This one, yes, this one, the bones of this one are are I think conceptually very, very interesting, but they it's not a it's not a movie movie. It's not like you're not no you're not digging into the popcorn and going like, oh, I'm on I'm on a thrill, right?
SPEAKER_02And it's I'm having a fun time.
SPEAKER_01And I feel like there was intention to that as opposed because what you'd really want to do in this movie is you'd want to get him trapped in there and not not get out.
SPEAKER_02And then what if we trap him in there and then we don't show any of that part, and then we cut to a weird amount of time later that we don't really know, and he's already in there and living in it, and is you know what happens in the that's the in so my problem, Dan, is the most interesting thing that happens in this movie happens off screen. And I don't like that. See, I love it. Him realizing that he loves living in the backrooms, that takes a special kind of person, and I gotta see that descent because we're like he's just like, oh, I'm in the back rooms and this is no good. Help me, help me cut. I love this place, I'm crazy. No, that's the movie I want to see. I want to watch his descent into madness in these rooms. I uh I I don't like it.
SPEAKER_01And it feels like it see, I I understand what you're saying, and I think that's a choice. I think it's a very specific choice.
SPEAKER_02It's a and a very different movie. I understand that.
SPEAKER_01And I I liked it because it because it did break down the idea of movies, right? The idea of movies is to to to take you on that art. This one's like, no, this this guy, this guy is fucking broken, and he spent too much time in this place, and it it it mapped right onto his brain in the way that you know. I I don't know. So you thought it was a a thing for about addiction.
SPEAKER_02Really? That's kind of what I was getting out of it. Yeah, I don't know.
Manosphere Subtext And Real World Horror
SPEAKER_02Interesting. But listen, the it's one of those movies that they don't really tell you what it's about. You know what I mean? Which is fine.
SPEAKER_01I mean it's fine. They specify pretty specifically that it's an anti-manosphere thing. And explain to me what that word means. Um, you know who Andrew Tate is?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Hold on, let me look at the other.
SPEAKER_01You don't know who Andrew Tate is.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_01You really don't live you don't live in the real world, do you? You don't don't live in the real world.
SPEAKER_02Is he like the is he's like the men's rights idiot? That's called the man the manosphere. It's a dumb name. They should come up with a different name for that. Well, I mean Who would want to join the manosphere? Not me. Um, every male child in the world, unfortunately. You wouldn't you wouldn't rather want to join the woman's sphere, you know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_01Like hello. Of course, we would have looked at these guys like they're the biggest losers ever. Just been like, what is this shit? We watched uh um we watch all those police videos. So I love how often you bring them up. I really do. I think this is precious. It is a way to analyze you know what goes on in the world.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um the the the they get a fire alarm. They get a fire alarm at the Frat House, University of Iowa. They go there, they go downstairs.
SPEAKER_02You said a lot of bad things in a row there, continue.
SPEAKER_01They go downstairs. I mean, talk about horror movies. They go downstairs, they're in this room with this wet floor, are all these guys in their boxer shorts with their with their uh blindfolded. Thirty or forty guys.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And we all know what that is, it's hazing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it is. Are they all dead? Did they mess it up?
SPEAKER_01No, they're all fine. Oh, okay. But there's like the three guys that are the guys who were pretty much doing it, who were like not giving the cops their names, the one guy tells the cops to leave He tells them that they should leave. You should probably get out of here. And these are like just truly, truly terrible people, you know, trying to turn other people into truly, truly terrible people. And it ended up, you know, the the the frat the it the frat got got its hand slapped until this video, this police video went out into the world. Oh, sure. And then the whole frat got suspended for four years. Four years! Four years. But if you suspend the frat for four years, then you're gonna have a whole new frat. You know, it's like well, yeah, all that old blood's gone, you know.
SPEAKER_02That's great.
SPEAKER_01That's a smart move. The point being is it was like, you know, it was I don't know what the point was, but it was like looking at these kind of people that these are these are weird fucking people and it's like a horror movie. But we're talking about the back rooms or back rooms.
SPEAKER_03Um we can call it the. I think it's fine, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I wish I could.
SPEAKER_03I will not disrespect this creator.
SPEAKER_02Um I will.
SPEAKER_03So it'll be fine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. No, actually, I mean, here's my thing.
SPEAKER_01What's your thing, Tony? I don't have a we were comparing obsession to background.
SPEAKER_02Well, I so okay, if we want to do that real quickly, let's just talk about the
Lore Questions And Web Series Expectations
SPEAKER_02rules. Because I uh it's weird because I was on Reddit and people were kind of that was one of the complaints of this movie that I saw is that they're they didn't really understand the universe, and then other people were like, Well, you have to really watch the web series that he created, which is 22 episodes or something and three hours long. Oh, it kind of actually delves into the backrooms itself as opposed to this movie that I don't think does, which is my problem. A big part of the my problem with this movie is it's not actually about the backrooms. The backrooms are in it, it's more of like a tale of the backrooms as opposed to a movie about the backrooms. Does that make sense? Yeah, and that's fine. I think that's a choice, but I also think in a in a in a way you're also assuming anyone has ever heard of your web series. Apparently, it's like a 4chan. It started as a 4chan mystery or whatever, where someone posted a picture of a room that was yellow and empty and was like, it's endless caverns of rooms, and then you know, people do their conspiracy theories or whatever, which is cool. And then this guy made a web series about it, and then he made a movie. But when he made the movie, he was he made the choice to make it about a character as opposed to the lore of the room, and part of you has to know a little bit of the lore of the rooms to like really enjoy the movie. I feel and you loved the movie, so I'm clearly wrong.
SPEAKER_01Um, okay. Well, there's a couple things. First of all, there's now now my brain is not gonna work. There was this series on sci-fi that was all these creepy pastas, and there was this one where there was this house that would appear at the end of the street, and then it would kind of go viral when people found out about it, and then they'd go there and you'd kind of tour through it, and then the next morning it would be gone. But I think the one girl went all the way through it and you know, ended up in the other place, you know, where the house was sort of coming from, and then it sort of so you wanted more of a people know about the back rooms and they sort of spiel lunk into the back rooms and I think that again that's just me saying I'd prefer a different premise, which isn't really a critique of this movie.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but personally, yes, I think that that would have been for me more interesting than this tale of this guy who I didn't like and wished he was dead. Well, yeah, that's what happens. It is what happens, and yet when it happens, I feel no catharsis because I'm laughing too hard at the pirate man. Um and the problem is, I guess I just don't know how you do it differently. Like, it's not when I hate this pirate character, I'm not wishing or thinking it should be different. I just hate it. I just am like, nope, let's try, let's do a different storyline. I really don't like this at all. Um, which I think is unfair, but it's how I feel. Yeah. And um, oh, to quickly finish the obsession comparison. I actually feel like this movie does a fairly good job of explaining to you the rules. Sure. I think people have a problem differentiating rules with answers because they're not the same thing. No, a rule is not the why of it all, the rule is just here's how the universe works, and we're gonna play in this playground. Obsession does not do that whatsoever. Obsession's like, here's here's what we're gonna do, but we'll also do this, and then maybe you this can happen too, because we don't really give a shit about the rules. This movie at least sets up it knows how to live in its universe because uh, you know, apparently he's done 22 episodes of a web series, so he understands the lore that he's created and he lives within that lore. He never, as far as I can tell, he never breaks his own rules, he never changes anything. Like this is what it is, and this is how it works, and this is the story of how we're using it. They they so I appreciate that a great deal.
SPEAKER_01They set up when he has a map of the place, he has a map of the place. Yeah, 100%. If you want to make it scary, he shouldn't have a map of the, you know, he shouldn't.
SPEAKER_02Or we should watch him make the map a little bit.
SPEAKER_01We really don't. But there's nothing, but there's not that much to see. You know, that's the thing that's kind of that's sort of the pitch is that it's there's not until you find the things that are worth once you find the things that you want to see, then you've gone too far.
SPEAKER_02That's I agree, and we've gone too far, I think. But listen.
SPEAKER_01And you know, once once you've gone too far, you're you're stuck. You know, you're either you're either dead or you're, you know.
SPEAKER_02Um or you're him, or you're Carl. Is his name's Carl, right? Did I do that right now? Clark! I knew it was a C. I was real close. Because it is Captain Clark's. I'm gonna give myself credit. Yeah. Because that's that's pretty close to knowing a name of a movie, which is not usually what happens.
SPEAKER_01And what's the therapist's name?
Therapy Plot And What The Movie Means
SPEAKER_02Oh no, I don't know. Doctor. Dr. Jones. Uh Dr. Mary Klein. Ah. Question for you. Yes. Where's she from?
SPEAKER_01So suburbs, but by way of Amsterdam.
SPEAKER_02I meant the actor. I yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01See, uh, so she has a she has an affectation, you know.
SPEAKER_02Just let her have an accent.
SPEAKER_01Why don't you look why don't you look up where she's actually from? I mean, okay, I'm gonna look her up. All right.
SPEAKER_02So backrooms, Norway. She was born in, oh boy, so Solbergave, Solbergave, Norway. I'm butchering. I shouldn't even try. She's so happy right now. Um she's like, see, it's not easy, you fat fuck. Um, just let her have the accent, right? Because it feels like she's trying not to have an accent, but then she kind of still does, and especially on some words. And I'd rather just let it be natural.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but she had to grow up in the suburbs and they had to make her full American.
SPEAKER_02She has to, because I actually will I don't understand her storyline at all, if I'm being honest. I didn't get hers.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I did you? Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_02Oh, oh, of course, of course. My name's Dan Goodsell. I understand all stories.
SPEAKER_01You see, you no, I don't, it's not that I understand all stories, is like sometimes the sort of shortcuts to things work for, you know, it's like you were talking about how this was uh about addiction. I like didn't get any of that, but like her story, I felt like I understood what they were trying to get at.
SPEAKER_03Okay, well, you'll have to tell me.
SPEAKER_01I mean, basically she has a schizophrenic mother. And so there's a dissent of that, and then the the kind of question mark of that is does that give her a tuning to the situation of the backrooms? And and the sort of implication is is this sort of schizophrenic person are they part of sort of the generating force of what occurs in in the backrooms?
SPEAKER_02That uh everything you just said, gobbledygook, Dan. Just nonsense to me. Well, that's that's those are the types, Dan, those are the types of the answers that make me go like this. Oh my god. You see what I'm saying? This whole movie. This reminds me of Aaron Os. What movie did we watch with fucking the Gladiator dude?
SPEAKER_01Oh, uh The Gladiator 2? Or do you mean uh what's oh no no no, you mean you mean uh whatchamacallit? We haven't done Phoenix. We haven't done Edgert Edward Edgerton, is that what it's called? Because I looked at that. That was Ari Astor's movie. Uh I don't know what it's called. Dude's name. Oh, that movie. See, that movie, that movie was trying, that movie was trying so hard at this kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_02I listen, I'm going to agree with you that that that movie is uh on a scale of one to ten, that movie's a fifty, right? And this movie's like a seven, but it's still the same kind of movie to me. It is. And I just hate them.
SPEAKER_01You don't like the sort of nods, nods of thing, and and things where you can kind of you like make a supposition. Well, my feeling is, you know, yeah, she's she sort of, yeah. I I understand.
SPEAKER_02And I don't judge, I don't judge people that enjoy things like that, but that's not where I don't want my art. I just guys, I want to have fun at the movies. Okay. You want to make something that makes me think, paint a paint a picture that I have to look at and try to decipher. I don't make a movie about it. Tony's I I'm sorry, I just don't enjoy it.
SPEAKER_01Tony's like, put that line in there that explains the thing if you're not gonna have the character doing the thing to show us the thing, right?
SPEAKER_02I you gotta pick one of the two. And honestly, if you just tell me, I'm still gonna make fun of you, but at least I'll respect you for it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um one other thing, this movie, I I thought the the end part with the pirate and and her sort of descending in there, I I thought that was well done, and I thought that was scary, and it got me going, you know, got me. I'm on it.
SPEAKER_02I didn't find it scary at all. Okay. Um, in fact, I fell asleep and had to rewind it. But I so what's interesting is I actually felt the scariest scene of the movie is the first scene. Okay. When we're doing the found footage with the guy that works at the MRI joint. I assume that's who it was. Yeah. Um and when he starts getting chased by whatever it is. Yeah. That's my favorite scene of the movie. That's the that's what I like. Um and they they also do some of the stuff with Clark. Did I say that wrong again? Clark. Okay, car. I was saying car before. Okay, Clark. In the in the first, his first like part of that film. I I really like where it's going, and then it makes a left turn for me, and then I hate it.
SPEAKER_01I will say that in sort of my pitch about this movie, we cut out that entire first chase scene. That's so funny. I loved it.
SPEAKER_02We really wanted two different things out of this movie because you like the third act more than you like the first two. Yeah. And my thing is like, no, no, I like the first two, and the third act goes completely different direction than where I would like those first two acts to add up to. Yeah. But I'm not saying I want to be very clear because I feel like I'm not saying I think the third act is wrong. It's just not my choice. Sure. That's not where I would go in the movie.
SPEAKER_01And that's, you know, movies are puzzles, and you know, hopefully, as you move along in your career, you get better at putting the puzzles together in a in a way that works. And that's that's why I think we we bitched out obsessions so bad, is because it didn't understand what it was saying tonally. And if this movie understood perfectly exactly what it was saying totally. Yeah, and it's just wrong. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Because people can be wrong. And you it was not the tone for you. No, it was not the tone for me. But here's what I will say. I'm gonna say a couple of things, and then I'm done. I I promise I'm done. Um I'm happy this movie did well. Yeah. I think I think that that's great.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, not if if I had seen this movie in theaters, I would have been livid. But I did not because I, you know, I knew. Um, but I'm I'm super glad it did well.
SPEAKER_01It it is interesting to sort of, you know, look at look at this movie and obsession and weapons, yeah, kind of as this sort of triangle of all these things that are, you know, you can also put it follows in there, and you know, there's all these sorts of things. But I wouldn't I know you wouldn't so it's but but they're all filmmakers that that are sort of establishing this visual style, establishing this sort of storytelling style, and and you know, will will Hollywood suck them up and and and make them horrible, or will they will they come up with more ideas that are really interesting?
SPEAKER_02But maybe they'll fix them, you know what I mean? Because here's my here's my problem. All those movies you just named, not a single one of them scary. And yet they're considered horror movies. So we need to work on the scary part of it all. You know what I mean? Barbarian was scary. Barbarian was scary for part of the movie, yeah. And then wasn't anymore. Barbarian scary.
SPEAKER_01Oh, the whole first part of Barbarian was awesome. The ending was scary with it down in the tunnels.
SPEAKER_02It see, it does that loses it for me. That's so interesting because once we once we get into the meat of it, I'm like, okay, well, now this is silly again. But the the tension built in that movie is wow, unbelievable.
SPEAKER_01The initial tension is absurd. How they he so he knows he knows how to play the audience how he wants to play them. And for sure, he wasn't truly making he wasn't trying to scare us to death in weapons. He did exactly what he wanted. He yeah, he of all of these guys, he understands how to modulate. And what's it is the silent, whatchamacallit, silent hill's coming. It's done, it's in the can. People have seen it. It's in the can.
SPEAKER_02Oh, oh, okay. Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's done. I love I'm I'm ready for it. Yeah, you know, like it's not whereas I I'm I'm gonna every movie you named, I will see that filmmaker's next film. Yeah. But I'm not gonna be excited for
What Makes Horror Actually Scary
SPEAKER_02all of them. I am excited for his. Oh, yeah. So that's to me, that's the difference, you know.
SPEAKER_01The people that saw it that were complaining, all they said was, Well, this isn't just a remake of one of the games.
SPEAKER_02Right, which I think he's been very clear about. I'm pretty sure, like from day one, he's like, I'm not going to do a remake of the game, I'm just gonna put it in the world. Yeah, which that's it, which is the right move, by the way.
SPEAKER_01It's absolutely the right move. Because all us people that have never played any of those games is gonna just watch it and be like, oh, it's a movie.
SPEAKER_02But you should, by the way, you should probably do it. There's there's some of them super fun. Um, okay, last thing, and then we can start the movie. So last night we went to the uh Midsummer Scream convention down in Long Beach, California. Yeah, how was that? Um wonderful time, absolutely wonderful. So I've got a new faculty hat. Oh, the faculty hat. And then I got a new Monster Squad t-shirt. Oh, the monster squad. Which is what I was Dan made fun of me for wearing tie-dye today. It was very rude. Yeah. Um great time. We saw three people dressed as the lady from Weapons, and I was like, that's funny. Dan, Dan's, Dan's loving that.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it's an iconic, it's an i even if it wasn't a scary movie, it's an it's a new iconic horror character. And not a lot It's a character. Not a lot of people get to make iconic horror characters. You know, they're tough.
SPEAKER_03That's great.
SPEAKER_01You got Chucky, you got Freddie, you got Jason, you got the other guy, Friday the 13th guy, or whatever.
SPEAKER_00Uh the other guy.
SPEAKER_01What's the other guy? Jason and other Jason? What's okay? Yeah, exactly. Other Jason, Michael, you got Michael Myers, Jason Vorries, Freddie Krueger. Those are the big three, damn. And then you got Chucky, and you got the lady from weapons, and there's probably a few others, but uh Ghostface from Scream, a lot of ghost faces there last night.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Uh yeah, it's fun. It's fun. There was a there was a Jason there that I swear to God was six foot six and like thick, and I was like, put this guy in the fucking movies. This guy gets it. Uh he was great. Tony's out there casting. Mmm, you're high. Exactly. Yeah, fan casting at best. Um, it was a super fun time. I'm gonna complain a little bit. So the reason why I'm wearing tie-dye, which is not something I wear on a daily basis, is because nobody makes horror t-shirts in any colors but black. Oh, that's true. Every horror t-shirt is black with a with a with a picture on it. Fuck you. Make some I hate wearing black. I hate it. It's hot. I don't think I look good in it. I don't wear black. Full stop, but I want to wear your t-shirt. Just do any other color. Do a dark charcoal heather gray. That's all you need to do. It's almost the same thing, but not quite. I just I I have to tell everybody, they're stupid. You're losing out a lot of money. Make any other colors but black. Please, God. When I So this is and this is what happens. I look like an idiot sometimes, but it's worth it because this monster squad shirt's dope.
SPEAKER_01When I used to do shirts, the first shirts I ever did were all white, and then I was like, okay, no. And then I would always I just pick whatever colors I wanted. I'd be like red, yeah, bright yellow, and you know what? Every color sold. People like colors.
SPEAKER_02It's very weird to me.
SPEAKER_01So fix that, horror people. Fix it. Uh my one last through last thing before we go into it. I have actually watched some stuff and seen some TV where I see something and I think backrooms. That it there's definitely some residual residual stuff from the the sort of production design and and and sort of the look of it. And one thing I will say is there are there are a few production design things that annoyed the hell out of me, and I will point those out. Um, but for the most part, I think they did everything really well.
SPEAKER_02I I think it looks great. Yeah. I think it's I think again, similar to Obsession, I think it's a very well-made film. Yes. Uh yeah. No, no. Let's let's go because there are people that are listening to this that are turned off because they're like, they're not talking about this fucking movie.
Found Footage Opening And First Monster Debates
SPEAKER_02We're done with that.
SPEAKER_01Uh the first 10 minutes are basically this one guy who's sort of lost it's uh it's found footage. We set up 1990. He's like, oh god, oh god, he's going through the yellow back rooms, he's running a bit, he's breathing, then he finds some cables, and he says yes. Then he follows them to a tripod, then a room of equipment. He's trying to call somebody to come get him out. This is the one thing that annoyed me is they have like the steering wheel from the this pirate ship. You got some of those embedded in the wall.
SPEAKER_02They don't look right, they just don't look right. Oh, that's fine. I get that. Um it it leaves me with a lot of questions that are not answered in this movie. Well, yeah, they are of like timing. Yeah, that's right. The timing of it. Oh, I see. You know what I mean? Like, when is this guy lost compared to when lost his name? It's not Clark, thank you. It's the same time period.
SPEAKER_01Same time period, but aren't so I So what happens is what happens is Clark is is Clark has mental problems, right? And so basically people with mental problems are generating the backrooms based on their environment. Right? Yeah, they feed it. They feed it and it grows off of them. And so what we're gonna find out is this guy works for a company that sort of caused them the backrooms to start, or at least gave them. I I think it's probably they opened the doorway. Yeah, yeah. MRI company, and they gave us the access to the backrooms, and so they're they're in there trying to sort out what's going on with the backrooms and figure out the rules and sort of deal with them, or or figure out how they can monetize or weaponize them because you know, um, even though they're not because we're humans. Because we're humans.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So Clark has been generating this thing for probably multiple years.
SPEAKER_02Because he's so close to a gateway of some sort.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Right? Like I assume proximity may I I don't know. Because again, it there's no answers to the movie, which is fine. It's it's it's fine.
SPEAKER_01It's extra-dimensional. So it doesn't there doesn't have to be space on our world for it. It just it just grows and multiplies, probably based on his psychosis. And it's sure, you know, it's sort of bubbling out in all these directions, and then at a certain point, these different backrooms start bumping into each other, and yes, and then that's when we get problems. Uh not yeah, but um and problems occur.
SPEAKER_02Some problems occur in this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so so they were probably reached this one, and then they were starting to map it out to try to figure out what was going on with it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and so this is uh again, Dan doesn't seem to like this scene at all. This is like my favorite scene of the whole movie. No. Uh it's the most interested, I think I am in the movie. And it has my favorite line, which is just uh I've never been this deep before. Oh, yeah. And I'm like, whoa, okay, what does that mean? Like, talk to me. They don't. They don't. Um and then I really love him being chased by whatever he's being chased by. Now, is he being chased by pirate? He's being chased by pirate, I believe. Why? Why do you think that is? You know? I don't know.
SPEAKER_01We don't really know. I I don't think we can the the active agents of the psychotic person. I don't think we can really put any, you know, we can't really map out what their want is or what their needs are. And you don't like that. You want it to be like, I'm a killing machine, I'm gonna kill you because you're a teenager's having sex. And so you you want to be able to First of all, that's a great motivation. Let's not say that as if that's not perfect motivation. Okay. You want to understand why that why the creature does what the creature does. You I want to have an inkling.
SPEAKER_02You I would love to be able to like, this is an educated guess. You don't have to give me the answer. You can leave it open-ended, but I do think there need to be some bread crumbing involved.
SPEAKER_01I don't feel like we get a lot of bread crumbing. I think the idea is that we're we're talking about a thing, you know, a creature generated from a basically a psychotic mind. Sure. And it's just you're not wrong. It's pretty untethered, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. Um but it's great. Some of these shots are great. The the found footage shots are really nice, the way that you very quickly see the shape, and and then it turns and he's running. Like, there's a lot of really well-made stuff in this first scene, I think.
SPEAKER_01And we also have a seagull come in there, hit the wall, and then you thought it's dead, but it's not.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, the birds. We never I never understood the birds.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think it's the part of all part of the nautical theme.
SPEAKER_02But he doesn't have birds in the store, do you? No. So that's confusing. Yeah. All right. Boom, intape. But it's just very scary when that bird is on the ground and then walks up to it and then it flies away. That's a nice jump scare. There's a couple of nice jump scares in the beginning.
SPEAKER_01And it flies up and over this sort of weird balcony thing that just doesn't make any sense.
SPEAKER_02No, that's you are correct about that. Yeah. I don't know. Uh, but that's a nice jump scare. And then at the end of this scene, when he turns the corner and the monster's there, and you cut also a great jump scare.
SPEAKER_01So you wanted a normal horror movie that occurs in the backrooms. That's what you did.
SPEAKER_02You can just say horror movies. That's my problem. It's not, I just want a horror movie. We've watched three movies that are like, oh, horror movies, and none of them are scary. I just want a horror movie.
SPEAKER_03I don't get it. Unfortunately, it's not gonna happen.
SPEAKER_01Okay. No, it's not. Now we we get a little flashback of the um our our psychiatrist or psychologist, Dr. Mary Klein. Her childhood, they're tearing down her childhood home because they're putting up a high rise, and um there's like some handprints that they did in the driveway, and so that's gonna kind of be a thing that ends up coming with us through the movie. Right.
SPEAKER_02I and I'm sorry, she lives right out of this movie. I don't understand, I don't understand her backstory, Dan. I don't think that it is important, and I don't think that it's interesting.
SPEAKER_01I it's not necessarily interesting, but it's we we're we have you know, it's it kind of has this kind of has the barbarian model where you sort of have the you know first storyline, then the other character sort of gets inserted in and then in and go to the ending.
SPEAKER_02So that's the problem. Yeah, I don't think they blend together, and that's where I that's where I differ with the opinion. Because barbarian, I agree a hundred percent. It feels like there's several very specific different points of that movie where your story is changing, but I do think they all build together. Oh, yeah, and in the end, it's like it's awesome.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't I just never feel like these storylines meshed. Like I get it that they're connected because of their actual connection. But what is I don't care about her childhood. It doesn't actually have any bearing on what I think of her or how I feel about this move or what happens in the movie, other than they're like, well, look at look at her rooms now at the end of the movie. It's like, oh, room, room, a little bit less like the room, a little bit less like the room, and now she's in her room. I don't care. Oh, when they drop through. Oh, those were that was nice. It's a cool visual, but I don't understand what it has to do with anything.
SPEAKER_01Well, it underst it sort of shows how the you know how the back rooms sort of are is they're like they they they start with this material and then it just it breaks down to this distorts, yeah.
SPEAKER_02It all breaks down. I get it. I just don't care in the context of this movie. That ending to me would be more poignant in the movie that I want, which is the first two acts, and then a third act that follows that story, and then it's like this is kind of how the backrooms are made. But we do two acts sort of about the backrooms, in my opinion, and then the third act is strictly about this guy's psychosis, and then the end of the movie is like, well, see, here's the backrooms. I just I don't know, I don't think that it works.
SPEAKER_01Well, you wait till I tell you what the ending should have been. I can okay. Pins and needles all worked out, and they almost I thought they were gonna do it, but then they didn't do it, and that uh That's how I felt about the entire third act.
SPEAKER_02I was like, wait a second, this is where we were going this time? No way.
SPEAKER_01We meet we we see Clark's place, he runs Captain Clark's Ottoman Empire, Heath's then going to his the therapist, and um Heath talks about how he deserves to be alone. She's trying to get him to forge a new path. They do some role-playing where we we see about how he how his marriage collapsed. Um he was because he's an asshole. He's an asshole. He's he's he's an asshole who's really doesn't, you know.
SPEAKER_02He has no empathy, no empathy. This
Clark As A Character And Self Delusion
SPEAKER_02is misogynistic. Like he's just a bad guy. He's not a good guy. He's a bad guy. This is I and I I'm sure I've never actually been to therapy, and I don't know if this is what it's like or not, but it made me realize how bad of a therapist I would be. Because she's she's like, Are you you sure you bel belong alone? Maybe you don't. And I'm like, nah, he does. Well, he should be alone. Don't let him back in the world.
SPEAKER_01At the end, she sort of confirms all this, you know.
SPEAKER_02She's just 100%. She's like, no, stay in the hole, dude. Like, don't come out, nobody likes you. But that's how I am at jump one. As soon as he tells me what he says in that first scene, I'm like, oh, yeah, yeah, no, you're good. You should don't don't even go to work, actually. Just stay home and uh live in your house, bolt it up. Don't come out in the world. We don't need it.
SPEAKER_01That's so funny because it's like I have no disinclination towards incredibly negative characters. Like, I wasn't like, uh, I want this guy to go down. I was just like, ah, this guy's got problems. He's got problems, don't we all? He's got the problems which we all have. You know, you're like, well, you know, that's what's gonna happen with the booze. They're gonna kick you out, you know?
SPEAKER_02I all true. All true. So just stay down. You know, I I'm a bad guy, though. I'm a bad guy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but what about when he's like, I'm an architect, and then she's like, You're not an architect, and you know, did you have a how did you deal with all that? How did you deal with all that? You know, you being a you being an actor, but you really work.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so it does remind so it reminds me of a conversation that I've had in my life, you know, with my father, um where where he's like, Well, you're not an actor. And I'm like, Well, I I am an actor. I may not be acting, but that doesn't make me not an actor. And yet at the same time, I'm like, Well, you're not an architect guy, because you're not architecting. So I am uh walking contradiction. Wow, so you're shit, you're shitting on him when you're living the same life. Is that what you're saying, Tony? 100%. That's that is exactly what I'm saying. And it does make you stop and think, like, wow, I'm an idiot. And yet, I don't care. He's not an architect.
SPEAKER_01Well, and I mean, well, that is that is the whole I've been I've been watching these things. It's it's not healthy for me to be watching. I don't know if I talked about this. I don't know if you have either. But I watch like these create that the create I watch these atheists argue with crazy religious people on the internet. Oh.
SPEAKER_02It's probably not great.
SPEAKER_01You get obsessed. Because because you see this, you see this range of of psychosis and this range of of self-delusion. You see a a range of self-delusion. You know, there's some guys that are just like, yeah. But then there's other people that are like really, you know, they know they're they know they're self-deluded. It's very, it's very interesting trying to, you know, talk to them and deal with, you know, all their all their things they have to put together. And so, you know, Clark didn't seem that far gone. He wasn't completely because he was going to therapy, he was trying to at least do something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's what I feel like he's one of those people that's like, man, I should probably change. And I don't want to.
SPEAKER_01And I mean, this movie Which is fine. That's a very relatable thing. You know, this movie does really stick with the whole thing. It's like you can try to change, but for the most part, you can't really change.
SPEAKER_02Especially if you don't really want to. Like, there's a difference between knowing you should do something and actually wanting to do it. You know what I mean? Like, I know I shouldn't eat Taco Bell four times a week. I know that I should regulate that, but I don't want to, so I'm probably not gonna.
SPEAKER_01There was somebody on on one of these platforms, and they were saying crap about the uh the food at 7 Eleven that's on the rollers, and I I want Who the fuck was saying that's my favorite food on the planet?
SPEAKER_02I will talk to this person right now, Dan. Put me in touch. I wanted to send him your way.
SPEAKER_01I was like, I got the guy you need to talk to. He'll explain it. Explain why this is a good thing. Slapped the shit out of it.
SPEAKER_02The chicken, the Buffalo chicken rollers at 7-Eleven might be the best food I've ever tasted in my life. I love them so much. And then the kidos, oh my god. A nice crispy. It rolls them so they cook evenly. How brilliant is that? I wouldn't, if you put in the oven, one side's burnt, one side's not even cooked, right? Like that's crazy. The rollers are genius.
SPEAKER_01So you're looking for the at-home roller situation, aren't you?
SPEAKER_02I've actually looked into the at-home rollers. They are not that expensive, but they're hard to clean. And I it my desire for rollers do not outweigh my hatred of cleaning. So it's tough.
SPEAKER_01Well, and you do have a place you can just go to and uh 100%.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I can almost walk there, which is also very dangerous, you know.
SPEAKER_01So she's she's trying to say, you know, but he apologizes at the end after he goes off on his rant. And but she's like, you know, you need to you need to think about a new path. Um which is not wrong. Clark's trying to shoot. He uh we set up that he has sort of two workers, a girl and a guy, and they're trying to shoot a commercial, and then at the end he sits down in the chair and the chair collapses.
SPEAKER_02This is a great this is this is a great scene to me. I love this. He's got a fake peg leg that he's tied to his knee, so he holds his leg up and walks on the peg leg. It's very funny, it's very good. I love how out of breath he gets. Like this is he's genuinely doing this. I love everything about it, and then his shitty furniture falls apart at the end. It's it is so good, it's such a what it's not just like a it's a character moment, it's an environment moment, it's funny. I I think this is great. This is this is a wonderful scene.
SPEAKER_01I have a good time, but um they make one mistake they say that the chair is made out of like pressboard, and that's why it collapsed. And it's not made out of pressboard, yeah. Because I know what pressboard is, and anybody that works in
Production Design Nitpicks And Missing Payoffs
SPEAKER_01wood, it's like, ah, why'd you have to do that?
SPEAKER_02As a guy who knows all wood is just wood, it didn't bother me, but he did say something specific, and I was like, that's an interesting choice. Saying something so specific. I hope you're right. He was wrong.
SPEAKER_01It was the wrong choice. It was the wrong choice. You know, if it was it's like, you know, if it was something else, if it was like a cabinet or something, yes, but a chair's sure not gonna really have press board in it. It's gonna be it's gonna be wood, and I don't know. Whatever, doesn't matter. Um, okay, let's see, what's this? Okay, so he called it there's just like these little things that that are problematic that that bother me just just enough.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think that's okay.
SPEAKER_01He's having power problems, so he calls in a uh uh an electrician, and I guess there's one rat that is in the place. We we get a mention of the one rat.
SPEAKER_02Also a great so well, there's apparently two rats because she comes out and she's like, I thought we killed the rat. And he goes, We killed a rat. And I that's the most relatable moment of the movie for me. As a person dealing with mice, I respect it.
SPEAKER_01He goes down to the breakers, and then at the bottom of the breakers, sort of are there these three breakers that are red and sideways, and it just it doesn't ring true. It does the the the tilt because it's tilted in our world, and it does why is that in our world? There's nothing else from there in our world.
SPEAKER_02But also, is it from there? Because it never ties into anything.
SPEAKER_01No, it's just a clue that something is going on. I think they something's wrong. I think they should have done the clue some other way.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Yeah. I agree, because it doesn't we never again. I don't need answers, but that's never resolved in a way that's like this is why it or how it's connected.
SPEAKER_01It doesn't, you don't turn it on and the door opens.
SPEAKER_02It just doesn't, yeah, it's just a sort of no, it does nothing. And also, I hate the part where they f they see it, and the main clerk is like, well, that wasn't there before. It's like, yeah, it was. You would notice or you would know it's wrong.
SPEAKER_01He shouldn't give us a definitive answer. A hundred percent. Yeah. I don't I don't know. That's what you say. I don't know. That's weird. Yeah, that's what you say. Um then we have a little we do a thing with the doctor, she has like a book out, and I don't know if the book was a failure. I don't quite understand what the book part means, and they don't Dan.
SPEAKER_02I don't understand any of her storyline. How you feel about the book is how I feel about all of the things they show over.
SPEAKER_01Don't need it. I don't need any of it. Um, but we also see that when they tore down the house, she was able to retrieve, I think it was her handprint. It's someone's handprint.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. It's weird. Uh I mean, I I don't want to judge that, but it's it's a weird thing how much she carries it around. Like if you have it on your mantle, yeah, I'll allow it. Yeah. She seems to carry it to the grocery store. You know, like she just has it's just in my purse at all times. Uh, it's a little weird. I don't know. I said I wasn't gonna judge, and then I judged. I apologize, everybody.
SPEAKER_01Um, he is drinking and living in the store.
SPEAKER_02Again, very funny. That the reveal because he's watching TV. You're like, oh. And he's drinking, and you're looking at it, you're like, this doesn't feel like a real room. Something is weird, and then they cut wide, and you're like, oh, it's in the fucking store.
SPEAKER_01In the store, living in the store. Great, and then all the lights come up, then all the lights go off.
SPEAKER_02Um I love this light effect that they do. I don't like I feel like it's hard to do this. Like, they they were able to isolate lights in the fluorescence on the ceiling. That it I don't know. It was really cool. I thought it was great. I mean, he's clearly got a demigorgon, but um, you know, it was a cool effect.
SPEAKER_01Uh he goes out, he's listening to a you know, self-help tape, and he goes and stalks the ex-wife.
SPEAKER_02That's not great, it's not working, bud.
SPEAKER_01Then we had this weird one with the doctor where she's kind of got like an open house and there's people there, and then she sort of wanders back and takes a pill. That was the that was the one truly baffling scene in the whole movie for me, where I was just like Dan, you just said you didn't understand the book.
SPEAKER_02Now you don't understand the next none of her scenes make sense. I'm sorry. I I'm not quite sure what they're meant to add up to. That's what I'm saying. No, that's what I'm saying. They don't add up to anything. Just take them out of the movie. I understand your movie's much shorter then. Uh, but I think it's tighter without it.
SPEAKER_01So Clark watches uh an ad for Big Wayne's, who's his competitor. We didn't need that.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_01Um downstairs lights pop on. I guess this is the next night. He goes downstairs, and then through a series of things, he sees this sort of crack, light crack on the wall. Yeah, cool, cool effect. Boom, he falls through and he is in the back rooms.
Entering The Backrooms And How To Explore
SPEAKER_03The back room.
SPEAKER_01Uh there's a big pile of furniture, there's an exit sign, and he starts he starts moving in.
SPEAKER_02You know, he starts going, he picks up a couple of uh He does, he loves it immediately, which is fun. Picks up a couple of fused chairs, it begins to wander. Now, Damn, let's let's just do a real quick gut check here because Naomi asked me this immediately. Yeah. Would you explore?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I uh you want me to tell you everything I would do? Yeah, you know what? Let's do it. Tell me everything you would do. I want to hear. You start by marking. You know, you get straight paint. You have to start by marking. That's 101. Sorry. You start by marking. I I do like that at a later point he's taped off the entrance and exit. That was great. Um that counted enough as marking for me. Um I mean, I would have done more, of course. Yeah. Um, you're gonna map, you're immediately gonna get a camera. You're immediately gonna have, you're gonna immediately document in whatever form that there is to document. Not maybe not even necessarily a video camera, but you're just gonna go buy a camera. You're gonna buy a you're gonna buy a disposable camera or two, and you're gonna use those and you're gonna get them developed immediately to make sure that the because that that he still sort of was acting a little bit like this could all be psychosis.
SPEAKER_02100%.
SPEAKER_01You know, and even though, you know, so you you have to uh eliminate brain damage. That's the first thing you want to. And also you set something through the barrier, right? You should have tried to put push something through there and it should have gone wonk or something. Something they sort of dance around that stuff because like you don't think about it while you're watching the movie, but yeah, you know, you you would put something across the barrier to see what happened with physical objects, you'd you'd probably bring a bird across. You know, you do all you just start testing it. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you'd bring a bird across. That's exactly what you would do. I mean, you would want to have a bird, right? You know, the old canary in the coal mine. You do not want toxic fumes.
SPEAKER_02Uh and it's so hold on. Hold on. What is the canary in the coal mine? Because I've heard that a bunch of times, but is that what does it mean?
SPEAKER_01When you went down in the coal mine, there would what you'd do is sometimes this old old times. You'd break through uh something, and then that would release like, I don't know, methane gas or something, and gas that would kill you if you were down there with it because it would push back all that air.
SPEAKER_02But you you don't smell it. You don't so it's just like you don't know.
SPEAKER_01You have the canary, the canary dies because its system runs so much faster than yours. That's what that means.
SPEAKER_02For sacrificing canaries?
SPEAKER_01As opposed to yourself. You didn't know that as opposed to yourself, yes. Or or 20 other miners, yes.
SPEAKER_02There you go. You send someone else. You don't send yourself, that's silly. But you don't send a defenseless animal. Oh, humans are the worst. I never knew that that's what the canary in the coal mine meant. That's very sad.
SPEAKER_01Tony, I'm gonna tell you something.
SPEAKER_02Oh, God. Okay, tell me, Dan. Those chicken rollers, they are made with actual animals. There, first of all, I don't think anyone believes that. I if there is real chicken in there, it is such a small amount that you could get 2,000 rollers from like one chicken. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Our murder rate's very low. He passes a dead bird. He sees a person, but it's just a cutout of a caveman. I never understood what that meant.
SPEAKER_02How would you?
SPEAKER_01Doesn't make any sense. Oh, maybe the caveman.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. He comes back a couple times. Does that help?
SPEAKER_01He finds this panel, um, and then there's like a vent. Inside the vent is a backpack with some floppy discs from Async, which is the MRI company from the beginning. Yeah. I mean, he doesn't do any of the actual investigation. Yeah, the movie that Tony wants is for this to be some urban investigator kid, cool kids that are, you know, doing this, which is which is the movie you're supposed to make with this. That would be a fun movie. You're absolutely right. You know, it's like what was that hor there's the horror movie where the kids go to the wrong pyramid in in Central America and then they get trapped up there, and there's all these evil vines that are gonna that tear you apart.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's great. Is that the ascent? Could be. I think I watched No, that's like a spelunking movie.
SPEAKER_01I think I watched that whole movie. I don't know why I watched that whole movie, but I watched it one time. Um, okay. So he goes through The Ruins. He goes through the crawl space and finds a there's a whole room. There's a there's a hole in the ground with chairs in it, finds a there's a big crown chair, which I guess probably the pirate sits in that at some point. Um He very well might. There's like this booming noise, and then he hears a crash, and then he goes through this triple doorknob hole, and then he he's back at the stop sign, and then he leaves, but he takes a stool with him. Yeah. Yeah. Music uh music it music and sound design of this movie pretty damn good.
SPEAKER_02Pretty damn good. Oh, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, yeah, no, I agree a hundred percent. It builds one thing that I would say not one thing, one of the many things that I think Obsession does not do is build tension. And I think this movie builds tension very well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and but Obsession also did have good sound design, don't get me wrong.
SPEAKER_02It has great sound design, but it does not build tension. That's not that is not a fault of the sound design, that is a fault of the direction story and all that.
SPEAKER_01It has great sound design, but like not great sound direction. That's what you're saying. There you go.
SPEAKER_02That's great. Yes, that is great. I think I think this movie is very solid in that, for at least for the first two acts, and then it all falls apart. Um, is this the part where the bag the he's looking at the bag and like the the caveman gets like smashed on it or whatever, or does that come later? That's later, I think.
SPEAKER_01Caveman's pretty stable in this one, I think. Alright. I don't know where we should talk about.
SPEAKER_02I won't say what I was gonna say. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Um then we we do a cut to one of the the async people, and he's watching a video and he sees Clark moving around.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And we're like, oh, okay. So they're sort of observing, they're observing what's going on in other parts of the Which is great.
SPEAKER_02I love that. I love I love both of these stories, and then they're gonna intertwine in the third oh no, they're not. I'm sorry. That's a different movie.
SPEAKER_01Um He goes back to the therapist and he's acting all you know, he's he's she's the only one he has to tell. Um, and she's like, Are you drunk? And he's not drunk. And I was like, that's really it that's really a tell for what's gonna come, right? Isn't it? He's not drunk, he's he's in it.
SPEAKER_02He's got he's got problems. He's not he's not just an alcoholic, by the way. He's got real problems. Um, so here's where the movie I think misses the opportunity to make the right movie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um he is too quick in this scene to me to be like, well, I'm gonna prove it to you. I'm gonna he goes from like zero to sixty in that scene very quickly. I think it needs to be more gradual for me, but he should already be documenting. So there's like two I'm I'm torn in two different things because I agree with you. The first thing I would start doing is documenting this shit. Like you have to. But I think he's too quick to be like, oh, you don't believe me, you don't believe me. Ah, I can't believe you don't believe me. I'm gonna prove it to you. Because at that point, to me, he's already off the deep end. Yeah. I think there needs to be a slower gradual or build in that. Um, and then that because that could lead you then to a third act where he is crazy. Um and so yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, so you know, I this is the last time he's out of the back room. So that's that's what I'm saying. Like I So they they they did him a little hard. He should have just been, he should have gone in there, and she's just like, you know, I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, and then he's just be like, okay. You'll see. You're gonna see. Exactly. He does he does go uh too hard.
SPEAKER_02He goes too hard, which is you know, we we ex we speed up his process too much because we're not actually dealing with his process. Uh you know what I mean? Like he sh it should be his slow descent into the backers, but it's not he just is you know, he's not there and then he's there, and I don't know.
SPEAKER_01He goes to they he goes to Bobby and Kat's apartment, and he's all like, I'll pay you to come tomorrow to do research. Okay, the next day. How does he have any money, by the way?
SPEAKER_02He hasn't sold us a lick of furniture this whole time. He's never had a customer in the store, he's living in the store. He's not making money.
The Rope Scene And Backrooms Set Pieces
SPEAKER_01He's not making money. So boom, they get there, and you know, uh, they've he's got the Bobby's got the camera. He convinces Bobby to go through the thing. He goes through, then Kat goes through. Um he's been here every night. He's you know, they're walking, he's telling them, eh, there's even a pool down there. Then they're gonna what they're gonna do is they're gonna send they send Bobby down this really steep.
SPEAKER_02You love this. Oh, you love this? I I I just I love that this is the reveal. Yeah, because he puts it under the guise of I need your camera and I want to explore. This is research. And then he's like, but actually, I'm not gonna go down this hole. I'm gonna send you down this hole because your life does not matter to me at all. It's a really nice character moment that isn't too like heavy handed. I I love this moment. Um, and I again in my movie that I'd like to see, this is a great the first catalyst of him slowly descending into this craziness where he's just like, I'm gonna sacrifice your life because I'm curious about what's down there and I don't care about you enough not to send you into the danger. It's great. Uh more stuff like this.
SPEAKER_01Because they don't they they you can infer this, but they don't play it. Exactly. And I and that's great.
SPEAKER_02It's very subtle. Yeah, that is great stuff. Just wish the third act was about this stuff, you know? It would be so fun. So they Dan, you loved it. You're sick in the head. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01They they be because it yeah, it speaks to me on a lot of levels that aren't that aren't necessarily the move, you know, the the entertainment of a movie level. You know, I'm like, ah, conceptually, it's very interesting to me.
SPEAKER_02Um and it is interesting. I agree with you, but that interesting does not a movie make.
SPEAKER_01They send Bobby down. He finds this chamber that's piled with clothes, clothes of the people that the monster has eaten. Maybe I don't know. We don't know, but we know. Um very bad. Um, and so then, of course, uh the monster sort of appears, and Bobby's like, pull me up, pull me up, pull me up. And then classic. This is a classic horror movie moment. Yeah, they they almost get him up there, then they start sucking it back down, and then they made the mistake of also tying off the rope to the bed, and so the bed pulls them, everybody gets knocked down into the hole, he gets dragged off.
SPEAKER_02I don't This is the best, this is my favorite scene of the movie. Yeah, why don't you say what happens? Because I I was confused a little. So it they they all file down the hill, including the camera. Yeah, and the camera lands and is pointing at a door that is sideways, and the young kid gets sucked into the doorway, yeah, and it's it's great. It is it's awesome. It's one of my favorite, it's one of my favorite moments of the movie. Tight shot. Yeah um, but where did the girl go? Oh no, I don't sorry, no, I don't understand anything. I only like the him getting pulled through that door, and then it's done. And then I'm like, okay, now I don't know what's going on. Yeah, she does she run a different maybe they run different directions. She's she's disappeared.
SPEAKER_01She's just disappeared. Yeah. I don't know. He picks up the um he picks up the camera, cat's gone, he goes, and then they go to first they go to a white zone, and then they go back into a yellow zone, then he goes into a door, and then they go into Christmas time, where there's a Christmas tree and it's red lit. And then this is like kind of the island of misfit toys. There's the creepy guy in the chair that turns on the light, and then there's a woman. And is this the same woman this woman at the end? It is indeed. Okay, I didn't know because it goes really quick. He freaks the fuck out. He flees that, and then he goes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, everybody talks in obsession about how like, oh, she walks creepily, which doesn't even make sense in that movie, and that's fine. Uh, but this lady walks creepily too.
SPEAKER_01Terrifying. And I I liked it. Yeah, it's great. Um, he flees, and then we get this this bath, not bathroom tile, but like a pool room tile. Bathhouse. And it's like a bathhouse. And instantly my brain's just like, holy shit, who's generating this? Right? Sure. And I but you don't know. I wasn't even necessarily thinking shut up. I wasn't even necessarily thinking that Clark Psychosis was generating the back rooms, but I you know, yeah. I you get there, but you know, and then you start to realize that people are generating these places. And this is somebody bullshit in their head.
SPEAKER_02And that to me is more interesting than the movie we get.
SPEAKER_01Because that is the movie that I think is interesting. Well, I I think I think we've we've flitched we've switched places. I've become toning, where I'm I'm generating along with the movie and filling in the blanks.
SPEAKER_02You're thriving in the backrooms. You're generating the backrooms all on your own right now, Ted. I'm ready to go.
SPEAKER_01I can live here.
SPEAKER_02Not that psychosis, baby.
SPEAKER_01Um then he gets to this this weird, it's sort of bathhouse, but there I think there's maybe a couple of urns, and he can hear Kat. She can see him, she's on the other side of some wall, and they they can't figure out what's going on. And then he had set down the camera, and then somebody else picks up the camera and is filming. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Cut. Cut and movie over. I everything
The Third Act Shift And Why It Fails
SPEAKER_02that happens after this, I don't care about one bit. Um because whatever. Let's just keep going.
SPEAKER_01We uh we now we're gonna spend now we're with the with the the doctor. She gets a phone message, which I assume from was her I assume was from her dad, where I think it's or was it from Clark? He says I opened the window and I won't be coming back.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's Clark.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that is Clark. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's why she's like, what the H? I better go check it out or something.
SPEAKER_01I thought it was someone else, and so I didn't attribute that to Clark. Sure, understandable.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't think it I'm glad I didn't because I don't think it helps things. No, it doesn't. Doesn't make a lot of sense, to be honest with you.
SPEAKER_01She drives to his her his store. Okay. Um the async guy is sitting there watching uh eating popcorn with his family. He sees a commercial of Clark and then he realizes he had seen image. Oh shit, that's the guy. I of course assumed he was gonna go to the store and then also come through there, but that doesn't happen, which doesn't make a lot of sense.
SPEAKER_02No, it doesn't happen, Dan, because we we no longer do the story of the first two acts of the movie.
SPEAKER_01Doctor goes, doctor goes downstairs, hello, hello. That's the other thing. That's that's the smartest thing they did in this movie is when Clark went into the backrooms, he never said hello, hello, he never did, and that's the no and she did, so that tells you she's an innocent, and that tells you that she's a she's a human, she's like a regular person, yeah. She's like a Tony as opposed to a Dan. Um, who's not going to say hello.
SPEAKER_02Who just immediately feels at home. Um place is great. I love this place.
SPEAKER_01She sees a fly go through the thing, she goes through, she hyperventilates a bit, um, and then she starts wandering, she hears weird voices, she finds this weird Basquiat kind of painting, and then here comes Clark. Really nice shot where like you're like, Was there a person there? And then he he sort of leans out, and you're like, Well, what's going on here?
SPEAKER_03There was a person there.
SPEAKER_01What's going on here? And then he I think he says some choice words. I don't remember what he wrote.
SPEAKER_02And he's like whispering, he's talking very weird, and you're like, What is going on?
SPEAKER_01And we can hear the evil captain kind of banging around. Yeah, and then yeah, she she says to her, You're being too loud. And you're just like, wow. And then he's like, It's every place that ever was, stay calm. And then he gets by her and he chokes her out. Chokes her out. Yep, just puts her in a sleeperhold. That was so good.
SPEAKER_03That was so good. Very silly.
SPEAKER_01Um, she has a dream about her mom. Oh, she goes and visits her mom in the institution, and then we get this sort of we do this one.
SPEAKER_02She really missed a good moment in the institution, in my mind. Yeah. So the mom does this really interesting thing where she stares at the daughter in the first part, like it almost, to me, it almost was like a blame thing, but it was very creepy. And then they wheeled her away and they cross behind a pillar. Yeah. Now you're telling me the root. It was a they didn't take the root. It was a weird route. It was a weird root. And so you're telling me they go all the way around this pillar, and when you appear on the other side of the pillar, the mom's not going to be staring at the daughter all creepily. Come on! That's that's what you set up in that moment. What are you doing to me?
SPEAKER_01Give me a horror movie. See, Tony, you need to be like the horror consultant that you go on these movies and you show them how to horror it up.
SPEAKER_02This is how you horror, guys. Uh, I don't know. I was really expecting it, was really disappointed than that.
SPEAKER_01Then we do this sort of she's back in the house as a kid, and then we drop to another version of the house, which was less house, less house, less house, just a room, a room with a tiny little opening, boom, a room with a big opening.
SPEAKER_02Which is very interesting because it's about the back rooms, and then we're like, okay, now let's set all that aside because now we're just gonna deal with Clark's bullshit.
SPEAKER_01Uh goes down nine things, boom. Uh she wakes up and Clark is monologuing. Don't care. Do not care. Um, we do this nice thing where she's sitting there, and then we, you know, we're like, okay, what's going on? And we slowly realize they give us the information real slowly that she's tied to the chair. It was nice.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Um, so he's there and and she's like, what is this? And he's like a real mess. There's like a the woman who's sort of standing there who was from the one thing, the guy with the lamp is there, and then there was another guy there, and then we get a close-up of that guy's face, and he has like four pairs of eyes.
SPEAKER_03Four of them?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, four pairs of eyes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And you're just like after you after everything you've seen, you you understand that the the people that the backrooms are generating are fucked up monsters. Right.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Because everything's messed up, everything's, you know, close but not quite right. It's very interesting, but we're not gonna deal with it. Don't don't think too much about it, guys.
SPEAKER_01He stabs the dude in the in the neck because they don't feel pain, no thoughts, no pain, no ego, no fear. They just exist like furniture.
SPEAKER_02What is that? Yeah, what is that? I don't this is where we start going off the rails here. I what? Oh, because he Why don't they feel anything? Because that's what he wants.
SPEAKER_01He wants to not feel anything.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay. And then he's like, and you can eat them. What?
SPEAKER_02Then he What do you mean, and you can eat them? And then he digs into the guy's tummy and eats him.
SPEAKER_01What are you talking about? I wasn't happy with the the the thing that you pulled out of him. The stuffing? It was it was too light. I wanted it to be heavier. Sure. But didn't want it. Although there used to be this great. Oh boy, okay, I can't wait for this. There's this great show called uh what's it called? Um not secret obsessions, like secret addictions, I think it is. Okay. And it's all these people that do these things. They're addicted to things. And some some of them, some of them eat foam out of furniture.
SPEAKER_00What?
SPEAKER_01No, nope, nope, they don't do that.
SPEAKER_03That's all right.
SPEAKER_01What the and then they talk about like eating their way through like a whole couch.
SPEAKER_02No, no, I don't believe that, Dan. I'm not calling you a liar. I'm saying the show's making it up for shock value.
SPEAKER_01And there was a girl that there's also a girl that I don't know if she ate drywall. She ate something like that. She's just chewing through homes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I just don't understand.
SPEAKER_02I think they should have worked on the contents of his oh, should they have worked on this moment, thought about it a little bit more? Okay. Uh, it's stupid, Dan. This is dumb, doesn't make any sense, and I don't like it.
SPEAKER_01Great.
SPEAKER_02Okay. So you can eat them. What is explain? What does that have to do with anything? Oh, and you can eat them. What are you talking about?
SPEAKER_01Well, that's your explanation as to how he's been down here for a while. You gotta eat something.
SPEAKER_02No, I get that. Obviously, he's got substance there, and then they have water that they showed you in the bathhouse. Like he has a way to live here, but that doesn't make any sense, man.
SPEAKER_01What's her name? The girl cat, her head is in the refrigerator? I thought that was a little extreme. Uh, I guess so. I didn't need that. I didn't need that.
SPEAKER_02Um also, like, I you know, we should have seen that. Why does he kill her? I don't I don't understand anything. Well, I don't know that he necessarily killed her. The pirate probably killed her. Well, the pirate guy who I guess just kills everybody. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01And then she's just she's like, I just want to help you. And you know, he he knows this bullshit. And so then he the lights are flickering. He goes over and he scalps the woman creature and then takes her red hair and puts it as a wig onto the therapist. So because they're gonna do another they're gonna do one more roleplay.
SPEAKER_02So now, is that his wife, the memory of his wife, or is that just a random woman? Just curious. I don't think there's the right answer. That's a good question. I didn't think about it being his wife, but it I don't think that's because he keeps referring to her as having a fat ass, so you don't think that this skinny redhead lady's probably his wife.
SPEAKER_01I hadn't thought about that. I didn't that that that that that all sort of bounced off of me. So we basically we do the exact same role play that we did before, where he's like, I'm an architect.
SPEAKER_02Word for word. It's it's an interesting, yeah. I liked it. I thought it was a good choice. I was like, Clark.
SPEAKER_01It's Clark has not changed at all. At all.
SPEAKER_02Not even a little bit.
SPEAKER_01Yep. And then she's like, Stan character. And I was like, Oh, I just that was that was like the best line of the movie, stay in character. You're like, yes, yes. And then she's like, fuck you. And then then she she had loads on him, which I thought was like that's you know, that that's your option at that point, right? You're you you you got all you got left. There was this great oh god, there was this great show with Steve Carell and this crazy guy, and Steve Carrell's like called the Office, I believe. No. Uh Steve Carell is this guy's therapist, and the guy's crazy, and the guy kidnaps him, and he keeps Steve Carell seed up in a room. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it's you know Is that Will Farrell? No, I don't think.
SPEAKER_02Are you sure? I don't think it is.
SPEAKER_01I remember being a young guy with a truck.
SPEAKER_02Show gets kidnapped. Yeah, I don't think it's it's called The Patient. Yeah. TV miniseries. Like six episodes, maybe. Clicking on it, clicking on it. Where's the cast? There they are. Yeah, you're totally right. I was totally wrong.
SPEAKER_01What am I thinking of? I don't know. I I know what you're thinking of. I can't think of what it is, though.
SPEAKER_02Dominal Gleason. Oh, Dominal Gleason. Probably said that wrong.
SPEAKER_01Dominal Gleason. Having only seen he isn't one of the biggest stars in the world right now, but you don't know his name. Jesus Christ. Like he can ride his ticket. That guy gets to be in every movie and super weird looking.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, good for you. Good for you.
SPEAKER_01That was weird looking as the Barry, what's his name, guy? That guy is weird looking. Manilo. Yeah, Manilo. That's tough. Oh god. Um, and says so she yells at him, She left you because of your whining. I was like, oh yes, this is great. This is great. She's not wrong. She's not wrong. Um, and then she's like, You are your brain, you dipshit. She calls him a dipshit. I was like, Yes, please. I can't help you. It's not up to me. I can't save you anymore. I don't think you want to change. And then he's all like, nope. I don't want to change.
SPEAKER_02That's correct. I don't want to change. I like myself. Um, so then why does he get eaten?
SPEAKER_01Because he lets her go. It doesn't I it doesn't matter why he gets eaten.
SPEAKER_02It matters to me, Dan. It matters to me. Because he hasn't gotten eaten up till this point. He's best friends with his own monster.
SPEAKER_04He is yelling.
SPEAKER_02Uh he's yelling.
SPEAKER_01Uh got it.
unknownI don't know.
SPEAKER_01Uh monster.
SPEAKER_02I don't know either, but I feel like we should know. I really do.
SPEAKER_01Monster comes in and he's like a big eight-foot pirate monster version of Clark.
Pirate Monster Chase And Final Escape
SPEAKER_02Oh boy. Oh boy, oh boy. I won't say he's scary, but he's monstrous. Well, because he's not scary. You can't say that he's scary if he's not scary.
SPEAKER_01Okay. But the the ensuing chase, I think, is is terrifying.
SPEAKER_02I thought I mean I get that. My problem is I'm already laughing too hard at the monster itself that I can't fully get into this scene. And it's not short. This is like a 10-minute chase scene, I'm pretty sure.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is a real chase.
SPEAKER_02So about like I think it was about five, four or five minutes in, and then I woke up after it was over and I was like, uh oh, I better rewind that. I missed something here. And then I didn't, I didn't really miss anything, but it I just I couldn't get into it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So he cuts one of her arms free, and then the monster bites him. I don't know how she got out. I think she just undies her other one. Yeah, I think she was yeah, yeah. Um he bites him, she runs, she goes through this weird street scene, the pirates following, she goes through a door, uh, she has to climb over these couches, which was wonderful. I I was praying that there was gonna be one where she had to climb up a bunch of couches, which would have been beautiful. That'd have been cool. Yeah. She hurts her there was she hurts there wasn't. She hurts her leg in that. She has to crawl through a dog door, and then we get to the chasm. It was beautiful. Oh, it was stunning. It was this it was like a it was like an office building turned inside out, so there's a void in the middle, and then we just have strips of stuff around there. So you have to she's on the top level, so she's having to work. The monster's coming through there, there's a stairway over space to a door that's just sort of through in there. She goes around, she climbs up, she reaches for the door. The door doesn't hinge, it just falls. Ah, brilliant. It falls into the abyss. Um that brilliant.
SPEAKER_02Oh. You know what's interesting, Dan, is you could have that exact same set piece in my movie, only it would make more sense.
SPEAKER_01Um, she gets she climbs through, she's at like a she's she ends up at Clark's store, but it's a facsimile of the store in the back room, so it's the basement, but it's not the basement. She goes up to the top. There's like these gas things sort of set up around one of the cavemen cutouts. She tries to she tries to go to the front door. The front door leads nowhere. The pirate's inside chasing her around. The things go off and they shoot gas. The gas is affecting her, and it's affecting the pirate, but she's able to crawl out. Um, she cr she cracks the bad guy with a coat rack. They hit the helium, and then he's got her, and he's gonna eat her. She reaches into her pocket, she has the concrete handprint, which she beats him to death with. Well, not beats him to beats him off with, beats him, she beats him off with the stone hand. That's gonna burn. Um she goes, she follows, oh, she sees a cable, she follows the cable through this thin, this thin zone, and then she comes out, and there's these guys that have more of the gas. They spray her with the gas, but they they realize she's real, and they spray the monster with the gas, and she passes out. And then we have I wrote full ET slash close encounters of the kind. Because this whole thing kind of had a had a feeling of the ending of E.T. and the sort of the ending of close encounters, where you're like, what's going on with these government y kind of guys?
SPEAKER_02Sure. Now imagine instead of everything we just went through, if it was about the backrooms and she is escaping from Clark himself, who's gone mad in the backrooms, and these government people have been watching, and they come in and save her, and she's like, what is going on? And you know, then it all makes more sense. No, no, no, it's gotta be a giant pirate. I here's my thing. If you're gonna make it a giant pirate, make it a cool giant pirate. All right. I have nothing against giant pirates. But they can't look stupid, Dan. They can't.
SPEAKER_01You look cool. Um, boom, the X-rays, then she's sitting there with the doctor who would recognize Clark on the screen. She starts talking to the doctor, he's like, How'd you get here? She shows him a photo of the store. Yes, that's where you got in. She shows him a photo of Clark. She's like, Yeah, that's Clark. Then he explains that their company makes MRI machines, and then something happened, and then she's like, Well, have you been there? And she's like, Yes, I have, and he's like, now it's my job. And then he does this sort of nothing means more to me than this. And then at one point we've done a whole thing where somebody's like, if you were to describe what a dog was to someone who's never seen a dog.
SPEAKER_02That's so that's how Clark at first explains the backrooms to the lady beside it to her, and now she's explaining it to him that way.
SPEAKER_03Yes, exactly.
SPEAKER_01And then he's all like, okay, let's talk, let's unpack all this. There's
Ending Explained And Our Better Ending Pitch
SPEAKER_01doors opening everywhere, we don't know how to stop them. And then uh wait, what happened? Oh, and then we we we do the house being torn down, her house being torn down in a memory.
SPEAKER_02Why? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then we have this other this other shot of her generating a character in a chair in the backrooms. That's where we end.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Now, wouldn't it wouldn't it be more interesting if this was about the backrooms? And that ending would be great. And they're they're probably not gonna let her leave, which is interesting because she's you know, she's seen too much. Um, and then you know, you see her create a version of herself in the background. Like that's all very interesting. But the third act isn't about the backrooms, it's about Clark and being a little prick. And uh, I don't find that very interesting.
SPEAKER_01I loved it. I love the chase. I love how the scope kept expanding and how she was getting lost deeper and deeper. Are you ready for my ending? Or or my ending, which would also need some more subtle changes.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01He's like, How'd you get in here? And she's like, the store. And then he's like, Okay, and and what we find out is they the MRI place created the backrooms, but they got they got sucked in.
SPEAKER_02Oh, sure, sure.
SPEAKER_01They're they're stuck, they're trying to get out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, great.
SPEAKER_01But she's just moved deeper and deeper into the heart of it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So the ending is a reveal that they're not even out of the back rooms, they're still deep in the back rooms. Yeah, sure, that's great.
SPEAKER_01And they've been trying to navigate it and trying to figure it out, and their their whole community is stuck in the back.
SPEAKER_02Guess what the best part about that ending is, Dan? You still don't need the third act. No, you can still do a completely different third act and still have that ending because that's about the backrooms, not about this guy. Um, so that's my bit. I like two acts of this movie. One act of this movie. Oh god. Look at you, coneless. Oh, you're beautiful.
SPEAKER_01Say something.
SPEAKER_02Say something.
SPEAKER_01She just never do it. Do you want to see her bite me if I mess with her paws?
SPEAKER_02She's just so sweet.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_02No, you will not.
SPEAKER_01So that's the back room's greatest movie of all time. Tony's an idiot.
SPEAKER_02That's not that's not right. That's not right at all. Interesting. Wonderful idea. I'm very I do kind of want to go back and watch the web series. I'm very interested in the lore. I think that's cool. The world building's cool. Clark sucks. Don't want to see a movie with him. Let's move on. Done. Yes. I'm glad we watched it. I'm glad we got to watch both of the big I'm putting quotes around it if you're a listener. Horror movies of the year. Um, neither of them scary. Barely horror movies. Tony, Tony, the movies you watch aren't scary for the most part. That's I know I know that that's true. I know it's weird, but they they do things that you're supposed to do in a horror movie. Well, they have more, they have more jump scares and they they do put people into jeopardy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Great. Great. Obsession could have could have done it. I thought the doctor was in jeopardy at the end. So I thought it was exciting at the end. For sure. No, no, I get that, but it, you know, it's a giant pirate.
SPEAKER_01I'm so sleepy, I can't watch a movie.
SPEAKER_02It's a giant pirate walking through hallway. I just I I couldn't work. I couldn't do it. Um I work early. I feel like there's a difference.
SPEAKER_01Um now we talk about something we like this week.
What We Liked And Next Movie Pick
SPEAKER_01Uh I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I started Predator Badlands. I was like, ah, that's kind of interesting.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we wanted to get there. We had this grand idea of doing the entire Alien and Predator series from the beginning, and we didn't get very far, so we never got to Badlands.
SPEAKER_01Remember we did that one, the pyramid one? That one was terrible. Yeah. A VP, baby. Um, it's great. Super fun, super silly, yeah. You know, it's just a it's just a fun science fiction romp. It is, you know, and what's her name's great? Uh L Fanning, she's great. And uh yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, she is great.
SPEAKER_01Just like the the predator goes to this death planet and has to try to kill the most dangerous monster there. Okay. Hell yeah. Nothing wrong with it. I didn't finish. I gotta watch. I think I watched about half of it. I'm like, ah, I'm gonna I'm gonna finish this.
SPEAKER_02Tony. Yeah. Well, I just I'm following through on what I set up last week, which is Ted Lasso's back. Um it just feels like people don't love it, which is too bad because I did you just want to spend time with Jason Sudakis. I know you. I don't think I like him as a person. I don't think I don't think he I think why I don't think he treated Olivia very well. I think I don't know, like their relationship's weird.
SPEAKER_01Their relationships, I think you have to say that their relationship's weird because she's she's a person, she's weird too.
SPEAKER_02She, you know, I don't know. Sh definitely. And I'm I do, and again, this is now it could be rumors because I there's nothing confirmed in my mind, but I do think she cheated. But then I don't think he handled it well, and I think he's kind of a prick. It doesn't really matter. Ted Lasso's wonderful, he's a wonderful guy.
SPEAKER_01Jason Sudakis, I love you, and I forgive you.
SPEAKER_02I you know, you're not gonna be a little bit more than a lot of people.
SPEAKER_01You don't have to be friends with stupid Tony, but you can be my friend.
SPEAKER_02Don't be friends with me, just keep making Ted Lasso because I do enjoy hanging out with Ted. Um yeah, I don't know. It's you know, it's just it's just warm fuzzies, and sometimes that's all you need.
SPEAKER_01Now I get to pick a movie. Um, we're probably gonna be off for another week because I got uh my big toy show on Saturday. Great. Where is that? Where can people find? Glendale. The Glendale All-American Collectorama. Uh love that it's Friday and Saturday, but Friday it's like fifty bucks to get in, and then Saturday I think it's ten bucks to get in. So that doesn't make any sense. Well is Friday longer? No, it's like it's it's to get uh get the big buyers to come in on on uh Friday.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so nor us normies would come on Saturday then. Interesting.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02So we're probably gonna skip a week. Great.
SPEAKER_01Um because it's too hard. So I was gonna do I have like this I have this growing list of one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight movies that we that we have to do all of them. But a bunch of them are nice Halloween movies. So I'm like, I'm not gonna you know, I'm not gonna use any Halloween movies now.
SPEAKER_02Wait, real quickly, would you classify backrooms and obsession as quote nice Halloween movies? I mean, we I'm just trying to get a barometer of how I'm we would have done them in October, yes.
SPEAKER_01I I I think they are acceptable October movies, but I mean the ones I have here, the first one is 100% an October movie. Okay, all right. That excites me. That's great. I I just wanted to know the ball. It is my first October movie pick, and I am very excited for this movie.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'm excited now too. This is great. All right.
SPEAKER_01But you know, we were doing this, and then we still have to do Nate Mark Atsey's The Breadwinner. We're gonna do we're gonna do that one. It doesn't count as anybody's pick. We're gonna do that. But yeah, but after all the discussion we've had, and knowing that you're gonna have to spend two weeks thinking about this movie that we're gonna have to do.
SPEAKER_03Oh, Jesus.
SPEAKER_01It follows that I'm gonna pick a movie that's gonna get under your skin.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02I love that. First of all, let me just say I love that you put it follows in that answer, which frustrates me already. Continue.
SPEAKER_01Well, we're doing his second movie. Uh, what's it, Under the Silver Lake. Oh, fuck. I thought you liked this movie.
SPEAKER_02I love it. Am I gonna pick this movie?
SPEAKER_01I think you're gonna I think the level of hate that you're gonna have for this movie is is going to be incandescent. That's what I truly think. And so I I don't want to watch this movie again because it's it's yeah, it's it's a weird movie. It's all about LA.
SPEAKER_02Uh it's Andrew Garfield. Which already I know I live here, I don't like LA. I like I don't like anything you're saying, except for Andrew Garfield.
SPEAKER_01Love he's great. Yeah, he's a um yeah, and what's uh Ricky Lindholm is in this, and she is incredibly sexy. Do I know who that is? Uh Garfunkel and Oates. Uh, okay. I think she's Fred, I think she's Fred Armison's wife now. I think they got married. I think Wow, okay. All right, good for them. But this movie's yeah, I this uh not a lot of movies leave me sort of confounded where I'm like, I I will go back to that movie and uh and try to figure out what the hell's going on in that movie.
SPEAKER_02I don't know if there's ever been a movie that I left and was like, I don't know what's going on, I should watch it again. If I don't know what's going on by the end of your movie, you're dead to me. You're dead. I'm moving on, and I will never talk about you again.
SPEAKER_01So, Tony, you got two weeks to think about this before you gotta watch it and get get all worked up.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna get all fired up then. This is stupid.
SPEAKER_01All right, let's have some fun. Because you said that's what I do to you, is I find a movie like that and then I torment you with it.
SPEAKER_02You do you've done it a couple times. And I just this today's movie felt like a movie that you would have picked and I would have uh rolled my eyes at it. Yeah. Uh but I picked it to myself, which was unfortunate.
SPEAKER_01You did it to yourself, Tony.
SPEAKER_02Did it to myself, and that's that's never a good movie.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's the show. Uh, we'll be back next uh in a couple of weeks, maybe, maybe two weeks. Maybe maybe Tony will actually load a new uh from the vaults. He didn't do that the last time we did.
SPEAKER_02Maybe it's a big so here's that was actually a choice because I wanted upset for time to breathe, because only 11 people had watched it, and I was like, that can't be right. People need to understand why this movie sucks. Um, so I just tried, I just wanted to keep it up longer.
SPEAKER_01You said that somewhere that you you don't you just want people to have to deal with your your your take so that they can be it is not my take, it is the truth.
SPEAKER_02They just need to understand that they are wrong. Sometimes here's the thing art is subjective. I get that, but there are times when people are wrong. Both things can be true, okay? I'm just that that movie is not 94%. I I'm sorry, it's just not. This movie's got 94%. Yeah. Obsession has 94% on both. Its critic and audience scores are both 94%. That is not right. That's wrong. That is incorrect. I don't care if you like, even if you like the movie, I don't think you can reasonably say it's an A plus. It's an A 94% of a hundred. I'm sorry. It's not. It is so I just needed people to understand.
SPEAKER_01It is interesting to get to a point in your life where you realize that you've gone beyond the world. You know, you're in like a different space than than the youth and the general world. You're like right about that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a weird feeling. Okay. I am I am You wake up one day and you're suddenly like, this is what you people like? That doesn't make sense. I'm out of touch. I guess I'm out of touch. Yeah. It's weird. But and yet I'm not wrong. So I don't care. No, no, Tony. You're out of touch. I'm going down swinging. I don't care. Um, so that's but you're right. I didn't post. I will post uh uh from the if you have an idea of which episode you let me know.
SPEAKER_01I have no idea. Okay. I'll just repost obsession. Oh, you should play it. You should you should uh uh repost it follows.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I'll do it. I'll do it follows. You're right. You're right, that's a good one.
SPEAKER_01A good movie, a good movie, a really good movie. No, that's not what I said, and you know it. When when Slimy Mom comes to kill you with her sloppy, I mean that part's cool.
SPEAKER_02Don't don't don't get it twisted. That part's cool. Have I watched it more than once? Sure. Just that scene? Yeah, why not? Uh that movie sucks, though.
SPEAKER_01We'll be back next we'll be back in two weeks talking about Under the Silver Lane. Bye, everybody.
